When you hit rock bottom

Human Rights Watch recently published a 129-page report under the more than appropriate title “They’ll Get You No Matter What: Morocco’s Playbook to Crush Dissent”.

In this report the image that Morocco wishes to portray of being a country that respects human rights instead of being one that is totally repressive is destroyed completely. While his father ‘had the balls’ to put people in jail solely for using their right to free speech M VI resorts to despicable tactics of accusing dissidents of made up crimes.

The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth is that in Morocco the King, the prosecutor’s office,  the courts, the police and the administrative branches simply cannot be trusted and that they don’t give a damn about violating people’s rights.

Since  M VI ascended to the throne of Morocco in 1999 one can differ about his achievements if any but he cannot be denied the fact that he disproved the saying ‘when you hit rock bottom the only way to go is up’. After the dictatorial reign of Hassan II no one would have imagined that Morocco could get worse than the times of the years of lead, tazmamart and the oppression of the Rif Riots and yet Morocco finds itself now in a far worse state with a King who doesn’t care and is often more absent than that he is being a statesman.
